If you are new to the violin you may not have come across the word intonation yet. This is the name given to playing notes at an exact pitch. If you play the note slightly away from this pitch we say you are playing out of tune or you have bad intonation.
How can you improve your intonation? On the violin you have four other notes to relate to: your open strings. By using these strings and listening to the ‘beats’ you can determine whether or not you are playing in tune. Todd Ehle explains how:
